Let’s go Foraging!
Do you need a new hobby to slow down, pause and look? You work hard and there is so much information coming at us that we don’t have time and be over-whelmed by it all. You have lost touch with nature and what is around us. Well, I’ve got you. It’s called foraging! But what is it? Foraging is the act of gathering free wild edible plants for food. Although it has grown in popularity in recent years, you may not be familiar with foraging, but it’s been around since the dawn of time, when our ancestors had no choice but to hunt and gather their food, foraging would have been a way of life, even a necessity for our distant ancestors.
Nowadays, we’ve lost touch with what’s growing around us and replaced it with grocery stores stocked full of foods that aren’t always good for us. But there is a rich bounty of delicious edible plants just waiting to be discovered. Turn over some rocks and fallen branches, gather tasty greens among your back garden and rural areas. It can be as simple as gathering some leaves or wild plants, cooking them, and then trying them out. You can also get creative with it by making natural dyes or perfumes.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of foraging is you get to explore your surroundings and you can turn your back garden and hometown into a seasonal supermarket, with ‘aisles’ of delicious wild edibles plants, greeny weed leaves, mushrooms, nut harvest, fruits. Foraging could become your new favorite hobby if you want to live a more sustainable lifestyle. This practice may encourage you to try new and interesting foods, increase your nutrient intake, and even reduce your carbon footprint. That being said, it’s critical to educate yourself on foraging safety before you begin. Learn about edible wild green weeds, mushrooms, nuts.
Foraging is a good excuse to get out of the house, go on walks in nature, exercise your mind and body is also a great way to connect with friends and family, or meet new people through foraging events or classes in your area. This forgotten world would have you spend your time seeking ingredients you may find in the surrounding wilderness so you could cook a tasty meal in your house. Give nature a chance. Go for a walk in the woods. Foraging means you’re taking time outside in the fresh air, understanding and become aware of the environment, its seasons and what nature provides around us. It means we’re getting in touch with our primal instincts as humans connecting with nature. The most amazing things can happen when you engage with nature is connecting with the world that is all around us isn’t just fun; it’s a great opportunity to make us appreciate what we have been given and show us how much beauty is right before our eyes!
